A message from Kristin Oliver, founder of Open Rivers . . .The idea of Open Rivers first seeded in the wake of the 2008 bank bailout. A few years later, that idea got its sea legs in New York City as I grappled with how to move the money to the front lines of activism (and there was evidently plenty of cash flow out there to move if the roll call on the bank bailout was any indication).
I dove head first into development and fundraising for nonprofits that had incredible missions but were operating on unsustainable, shoestring budgets. While corporations were negotiating multi-billion dollar funding rounds and aiming for trillion dollar market caps, phenomenal people were doing work that would save the world. Yet they were ridiculously underfunded.
So I set my sights on diverting all that cash flow to them. It’s definitely a work-in-progress.
