Action Memo: Time to pony up for a good cause (yours!)

If you’re receiving these Action Memos, I’m going to assume you want to raise money for your cause. Hopefully, you already have a donation platform online to accept gifts (if you don’t, not to worry… more on that below).

Today, you are going to step into your donor’s shoes. You are going to go through the process of what it’s like to make a donation to your cause.

“But I already give my blood, sweat and tears to this cause. Now you’re asking me to give my hard-earned cash as well?!”

Yes, I am. For two very good reasons:

✔️ You can straight-up say that you walk your talk when you ask other people to donate.

✔️ You’ll discover first-hand what your donors go through when they give, and that is the valuable information that we’re most interested in for this Action Memo.

Before we do this (because I’m doing it with you!)… Keep this in mind: It’s not how much you donate that matters here.

I once received a donation of a single dollar. This was from someone who lived in an environment of some pretty extreme economic disadvantage and who barely had a dollar to give. Yet he was inspired by the mission and made a point to give what he could. That single dollar goes down as one of my favourite donations ever, and one of the most appreciated.

People give from where they’re at – Treat gifts of all sizes with joy.

Now let’s get back to work and… Action! 🎬

Step 1

Set the timer for 20 minutes (when you’re ready to go, click here for an online timer at the ready) and grab something to document with (text doc, pen and paper, voice memo – however you take notes).

Step 2

Head over to your donation portal and make a donation to your organization.

Step 3

Take notes along the way of what works, what annoys you and what could be done better.

Step 4

Calendar some time within the next month to remedy where things don’t go so well.

If you don’t have a donation platform set up yet, do this experiment nonetheless and donate to another organization you adore. What’s important is that you go through the process of making a donation and see how you feel about the experience.

3 resources to take it a bit further…

If this has been helpful to you, please consider making a donation! Your contribution is deeply appreciated and supports all of the free programming at Open Rivers.
